Relief map of Southern Appalachian Mountains

Causa Scientia

Twenty miles to my southeast are the primary ranges of the Appalachian mountains, which reach upwards of 6000 feet, 20 miles to the north are smaller ranges of a couple thousand feet. On the relief map these mountain ranges look like giant waves of earth that have rolled in from the Atlantic coast. They in fact are part of the Ordovician Taconic Orogeny.

I live between the crests. In the larger scheme of things, my area would seem relatively smooth . From the human perspective the area is filled with ridges of hills in the 100 foot range. With few exceptions, every one covered with trees.
