Back in March Brooks Leffler was notified by Joe Stanton of Stanton Hobby Shop that the KSB dethermalizing timer was no longer being manufactured. Joe informed Brooks that he was looking for a replacement timer to carry at his hobby shop. Brooks said that Joe Stanton sent him a picture of a timer that he thought he might stock called "Nanking II". Shortly after the notice from Brooks, there was a thread on the rec.kites newsgroup that related to timers. This thread was titled, "KAP QUESTIONS: 70 MM Cameras; Graupner Timers? ". Grant gave addresses for two dealers of different dethermalizing timers.

Since the Texas Timers address is here in the same area where I live, I contacted Hank Nystrom of Texas Timers. He carries several models, The model that seems to be perfect for KAP use is the "Texas DT" pictured above. It weighs 17 grams (.6oz). The face plate measures 2" by 3/4" (49mm X 23mm) and needs at least 9/16" (15mm) clearance below the face plate. The Texas DT can be set to give times over 9 minutes to just a few seconds. The release mechanism is very similar to that of the KSB timer and would require few modifications to work with the Brooxes Basic Brownie Box TM. The cost of the Texas DT is a little more than the KSB timer at $32US. $2.50 postage for US orders and $3.00 postage for foreign orders. If you email Hank he will return a short email catalog of all his timers and prices. You will notice that he offers several "two function" timers. The second function is used to cut off the fuel supply on gas powered free flight models. The maximum time for the second function is 25 to 30 seconds and the mechanism is designed to pinch off a fuel line and does not look as if it could be used on a KAP rig. [ Back ] |
